Assessment of Cybercrime Laws on the Prevention of Online Fraud in Nigeria

This study assessed the effect of cybercrime legislation on the prevention of online fraud in Nigeria. Statutes, enforcement data, and questionnaire responses from law enforcement officers and digital financial service users were analysed. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings revealed that the legal framework improved the basis for investigating and prosecuting cybercrime and enhanced awareness, while prosecution challenges, cross-border complexity, and rapid technological change limited prevention effectiveness. The study observed low conviction rates relative to reported fraud. It recommends enhanced enforcement capacity, international cooperation, and public education.
