Assessment of Democratic Theory on Governance in Developing Countries

This study assessed the applicability of democratic theory to governance in developing countries. A qualitative approach was adopted drawing on documentary analysis and interviews with political theorists and governance practitioners. The findings revealed that core democratic principles such as participation, accountability, and representation were relevant to governance, but their translation faced challenges of weak institutions, socio-economic disparities, and elite capture. The study observed that hybrid governance arrangements often emerged in practice. It recommends adapting democratic principles to local contexts while upholding fundamental rights and accountability.
