Effect of Nursing Staffing Levels on Patient Outcomes in Intensive Care Units

This study examined the effect of nursing staffing levels on patient outcomes in intensive care units in Nigeria. Questionnaires were administered to critical care nurses and patient records were reviewed. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that adequate nurse-to-patient ratios significantly reduced errors, complications, and mortality in intensive care, while staffing shortages increased workload and compromised vigilance. The study observed frequent understaffing in ICU shifts. It recommends appropriate staffing standards, skill mix optimisation, and supportive work environments.
