Effectiveness of Forensic Accounting in Fraud Detection in the Nigerian Banking Sector

Accounting2025, Undergraduate

This study assessed the effectiveness of forensic accounting in fraud detection in the Nigerian banking sector. A descriptive survey design was adopted with questionnaires administered to forensic accountants, auditors, and compliance officers in selected banks. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that forensic techniques such as document analysis, data mining, and transaction testing significantly enhanced fraud detection and the quality of evidence for prosecution. The study identified shortage of specialised skills and limited awareness of forensic tools as key constraints. It recommends greater investment in forensic capacity and integration of forensic examination into routine oversight.
