Application of Agenda-Setting Theory in the Coverage of National Issues by Nigerian Broadcast Media

This study examined the application of agenda-setting theory in the coverage of national issues by Nigerian broadcast media. A content analysis of selected news bulletins was combined with questionnaires administered to viewers and listeners. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings revealed that the frequency and prominence given to certain subjects influenced the issues audiences considered most important, consistent with the agenda-setting hypothesis. Economic, political, and insecurity-related themes dominated coverage. The study recommends more balanced coverage, wider inclusion of sectors such as education and health, and greater attention to developmental stories.
