Audience Perception of News Coverage of the Nigerian Economy by National Broadcast Media

Mass Communication2025, Undergraduate

This study examined audience perception of news coverage of the Nigerian economy by national broadcast media. A descriptive survey design was adopted with questionnaires administered to viewers and listeners in selected states. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test. The findings revealed that audiences found economic coverage largely superficial, overly negative, and dominated by transient statistics rather than explanatory reporting. Perceptions of media credibility were mixed, with many respondents desiring more context and analysis. The study recommends specialist economic reporting, clearer explanations of economic indicators, and balanced reporting of economic developments.
