Assessment of Investigative Journalism Practice and the Credibility of Nigerian Newspapers

This study assessed investigative journalism practice and its relationship with the credibility of Nigerian newspapers. A mixed-methods approach combining questionnaire administration and content analysis of sampled editions was adopted. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that exposure of corruption and maladministration through investigative stories enhanced public trust in newspapers, while unverified and sensational reports undermined credibility. Financial constraints, threats to reporters, and source reluctance were identified as key challenges. The study recommends sustained editorial independence, protection of investigative journalists, and adherence to accuracy and fairness in reporting.
