Assessment of Local Government Autonomy on Grassroots Development in Nigeria

This study assessed the effect of local government autonomy on grassroots development in Nigeria. A descriptive survey was conducted with local government officials, community members, and civil society actors using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that fiscal and administrative autonomy significantly influenced the capacity of local governments to plan and deliver development, while limited autonomy, political interference, and poor local capacity constrained outcomes. The study observed uneven development across councils. It recommends constitutional and fiscal reforms to strengthen local autonomy and accountability.
