Assessment of Nigerian Federalism on Resource Distribution Among States

Political Science2025, Undergraduate

This study assessed the effect of Nigerian federalism on resource distribution among states. Revenue allocation data were analysed together with questionnaires administered to state officials, academics, and civil society actors. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that the formula-driven distribution of centrally collected revenue, dominated by derivation and population factors, influenced state capacities and reinforced disparities between resource-producing and other states. The study observed recurring agitation for fiscal restructuring. It recommends review of the revenue allocation formula and enhanced state fiscal autonomy.
