Assessment of Records Management Practices in Government Ministries in Nigeria

Public Administration2024, Undergraduate

This study assessed records management practices in selected government ministries in Nigeria, focusing on the preservation, retrieval, and security of official records. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data collected from 330 records officers and administrative staff through a structured questionnaire. The findings revealed that while many ministries have established records units, practices are characterised by inadequate filing systems, poor storage, limited use of electronic records management, and weak disaster preparedness. These deficiencies significantly hamper administrative efficiency and accountability. The study found a positive relationship between the adoption of modern records management practices and administrative effectiveness. It recommends investment in digital records systems, specialised training, and the enforcement of records management policies.
