Assessment of Treaty Enforcement Mechanisms in Nigerian Law

This study assessed the mechanisms for enforcing treaties in Nigerian law. Constitutional provisions, domesticating statutes, judicial decisions, and interview responses from legal experts were analysed. The findings revealed that enforcement largely depended on domestic incorporation, with treaties not domesticated having limited direct effect, while adoption of some international instruments improved protections in practice. The study observed inconsistent implementation of treaty obligations. It recommends streamlined incorporation, capacity building in treaty drafting, and strengthened institutional compliance frameworks.
