Design and Implementation of a Digital Library Management System for Academic Institutions

This study developed a Digital Library Management System to automate the cataloguing, circulation, and tracking of library resources in academic institutions. The manual system was characterised by slow book searches, loss of records, and difficulty in tracking borrowed items. The system allows librarians to manage books, members, and loans, and enables students to search the catalogue and view availability. Built with PHP and a MySQL relational database, the system was tested for functionality and usability with library staff and students. Findings showed a significant improvement in the speed of book searches and the accuracy of record-keeping. The study recommends deployment across the institution and the integration of an online public access catalogue.
