Effect of the Separation of Powers on Good Governance in Nigeria

This study examined the effect of the separation of powers on good governance in Nigeria. Document analysis of constitutional provisions and interviews with legal scholars and public officials were adopted. The findings revealed that the separation of powers promoted checks and balances, accountability, and the protection of liberty, while frictions and overlaps among the arms generated policy stalemates and governance inefficiency. The study observed that executive dominance often undermined effective checks. It recommends strengthening of legislative independence, judicial enforcement of constitutional limits, and institutional dialogue.
