Effect of Therapeutic Communication on the Recovery of Psychiatric Patients in Nigeria

Nursing Science2025, Undergraduate

This study examined the effect of therapeutic communication on the recovery of psychiatric patients in selected psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was administered to nurses and patients recovering from mental illness. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that empathy, active listening, and structured therapeutic interaction significantly supported trust, medication adherence, and patient recovery, while dismissive communication reduced engagement. The study observed heavy caseloads limiting interaction time. It recommends supportive communication training, adequate staffing, and patient-centred care approaches.
