Influence of Family Support on the Management of Chronic Mental Illness in Nigeria

Nursing Science2025, Undergraduate

This study investigated the influence of family support on the management of chronic mental illness in Nigeria. Questionnaires were administered to caregivers and patients using a structured tool and data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that emotional, financial, and practical family support significantly improved treatment adherence, reduced relapses, and enhanced patients' quality of life, while stigma and caregiver burden undermined care. The study observed limited professional guidance for families. It recommends family psychoeducation, respite support, and community mental health programmes.
