Influence of Electoral Violence on Democratic Participation in Nigeria

Political Science2025, Undergraduate

This study investigated the influence of electoral violence on democratic participation in Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with voters in selected states using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that violence and insecurity reduced voter turnout, discouraged participation among women and the young, and eroded trust in the electoral process, while strong security and civic confidence encouraged participation. The study observed that intimidation disproportionately affected marginalised groups. It recommends security sector reform, prosecution of offenders, and civic education.
