Influence of International Human Rights Law on Domestic Courts in Nigeria

This study examined the influence of international human rights law on the decisions of domestic courts in Nigeria. Judicial opinions and interview responses from judges and lawyers were analysed using qualitative and descriptive methods. The findings revealed that courts increasingly referred to international human rights instruments as interpretive aids and sources of evolving standards, enhancing rights protection, while concerns over direct applicability persisted. The study observed variation in judicial engagement with international law. It recommends judicial training, harmonisation of standards, and broader incorporation of human rights treaties.
