Influence of Legal Aid on Access to Justice in Criminal Cases in Nigeria

Law2025, Undergraduate

This study examined the influence of legal aid on access to justice in criminal cases in Nigeria. A descriptive survey was conducted with defendants, legal aid providers, and prison officials using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that legal aid significantly improved representation, reduced case delays, and protected the rights of indigent defendants, while inadequate funding, limited coverage, and awareness gaps restricted access. The study observed that many defendants remained unrepresented. It recommends increased funding for legal aid, awareness campaigns, and expansion of pro bono arrangements.
