Influence of Mentorship on the Retention of Newly Qualified Nurses in Nigeria

Nursing Science2025, Undergraduate

This study investigated the influence of mentorship on the retention of newly qualified nurses in Nigerian hospitals. A structured questionnaire was administered to newly qualified nurses and their mentors. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that structured mentorship, supportive orientation, and regular feedback significantly improved job confidence, satisfaction, and retention, while inadequate support was associated with turnover intentions. The study observed that mentorship programmes were informal and inconsistent. It recommends formal preceptorship programmes, mentor training, and supportive working conditions.
