Influence of Social Contract Theory on Constitutionalism in Nigeria

This study examined the influence of social contract theory on constitutionalism in Nigeria. Document analysis of constitutional texts and interview responses from legal and political scholars were adopted. The findings revealed that social contract ideas shaped notions of popular sovereignty, legitimacy, and limits on governmental power, informing constitutional provisions and debates, while gaps between constitutional promise and practice weakened the contract's credibility. The study observed recurring constitutional review controversies. It recommends constitutional fidelity, citizen participation, and institutional enforcement of constitutional limits.
