Influence of the Political Economy of Oil on Governance in Nigeria

Political Science2025, Undergraduate

This study examined the influence of the political economy of oil on governance in Nigeria. Documentary analysis and interviews with policy analysts, oil sector stakeholders, and civil society actors were adopted. The findings revealed that oil revenues shaped fiscal dependence, elite competition, and patron-client politics, affecting accountability and public service delivery, while efforts at reform faced entrenched interests. The study observed improvements in transparency frameworks with uneven implementation. It recommends strengthening transparent revenue management, accountability institutions, and economic diversification.
