Role of the Federal Character Principle in the Nigerian Public Service
Public Administration — 2024, Undergraduate
This study examined the role of the Federal Character Principle in the composition of the Nigerian public service, focusing on its effectiveness in promoting equity and national integration. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 400 public servants and stakeholders through a structured questionnaire. The findings revealed that while the principle has contributed to a more representative public service, its implementation has been hampered by quota distortions, over-politicisation of appointments, and a tension between merit and representation. The level of awareness among respondents was high, yet perceptions of fairness were mixed. The study recommends clearer operational guidelines and the institutionalisation of transparent mechanisms for its enforcement.
