Assessment of Television News Programmes on Political Awareness Among Nigerian Youths
Mass Communication — 2025, Undergraduate
This study assessed the influence of television news programmes on political awareness among Nigerian youths. A descriptive survey was conducted among undergraduates drawn from selected universities in Lagos using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings revealed that regular viewing of television news significantly increased awareness of political issues, candidates, and the electoral process, although social media increasingly competed with television as a source. The study observed that younger viewers engaged more with entertainment content and less with in-depth political analysis. It recommends engaging youth-oriented political programming and improved information verification in broadcasts.
