Effect of Performance Appraisal Systems on Employee Commitment in Selected Public and Private Organisations

Business Administration2025, Undergraduate

This study examined the effect of performance appraisal systems on employee commitment in selected public and private organisations in Ogun State, Nigeria. A comparative survey design was adopted with a structured questionnaire administered to employees across the two sectors. The findings revealed that transparent, feedback-rich, and reward-linked appraisal systems significantly enhanced affective and continuance commitment. In contrast, perceived subjectivity and lack of feedback in appraisal processes were associated with lower commitment levels. The study recommends that organisations design appraisal systems that link results to rewards, provide constructive feedback, and ensure procedural fairness.
