Effect of Post-Harvest Losses on Food Availability in Nigeria

This study examined the effect of post-harvest losses on food availability in Nigeria. A descriptive survey was conducted with farmers, traders, and processors of perishable crops using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that losses during harvesting, storage, and transport significantly reduced the quantity of food reaching consumers, worsening food insecurity and eroding farm incomes. The study found that inadequate storage and poor handling practices were major causes. It recommends improved storage technologies, cold chains, and handling training.
