Influence of Customary Law on Women's Inheritance Rights in Nigeria

Law2025, Undergraduate

This study examined the influence of customary law on women's inheritance rights in Nigeria. Judicial decisions, customary practices, and interview responses from community members and legal practitioners were analysed using qualitative methods. The findings revealed that discriminatory customary rules, now moderated by judicial and constitutional intervention, historically excluded or limited women's inheritance rights, while progressive decisions recognised equality in succession. The study observed persistent conflicts between customary norms and constitutional guarantees. It recommends codification and harmonisation of succession rules and public education on rights.
