Influence of Market Structure on Farm Produce Prices in Nigeria
Agricultural Economics — 2025, Undergraduate
This study examined the influence of market structure on farm produce prices in Nigeria. Price data from selected markets were analysed together with questionnaires administered to farmers, traders, and market officials. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings revealed that concentration of trading, long marketing chains, and limited market information significantly influenced price formation and producer returns, with middlemen capturing a large share of margins. The study observed significant seasonal price swings. It recommends market information systems, improved storage, and strengthening of farmer marketing organisations.
