Influence of Social Media on the Practice of Journalism in Nigeria
Mass Communication — 2025, Undergraduate
This study examined the influence of social media on the practice of journalism in Nigeria. A survey was conducted with practicing journalists in selected media houses using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that social media platforms significantly enhanced news discovery, audience engagement, and real-time reporting, while also introducing pressures of speed that sometimes conflicted with verification. The spread of misinformation and online abuse were identified as major ethical challenges. The study recommends digital literacy training for journalists, stronger verification routines, and institutional social media policies.
