Assessment of the Nigerian Film Industry on the Promotion of Cultural Identity
Mass Communication — 2025, Undergraduate
This study assessed the role of the Nigerian film industry in promoting cultural identity both locally and internationally. A mixed-methods approach combining questionnaires with interviews of filmmakers and cultural analysts was adopted. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that Nollywood significantly showcased Nigerian languages, traditions, and social realities, thereby contributing to cultural pride and the international recognition of Nigerian culture. However, concerns about the portrayal of negative stereotypes and the dominance of only a few cultures were identified. The study recommends deliberate cultural authenticity in storytelling and greater support for the industry.
