Effect of Value Addition on the Income of Smallholder Farmers in Nigeria
Agricultural Economics — 2025, Undergraduate
This study examined the effect of value addition on the income of smallholder farmers in Nigeria. A descriptive survey was conducted with farmers engaged in primary production only and those engaged in processing and marketing activities. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that farmers who added value through processing, packaging, and branding earned significantly higher incomes and were less exposed to losses from perishability. The study found that limited capital and processing skills constrained value addition. It recommends access to processing facilities, finance, and market linkages.
